Recording Checklist

Whether you're recording in a multi million dollar studio or recording on your phone, the rule is the same. If you're not happy with your performance, you wont be happy with the end result. Take your time with it and use the checklists below to help improve the take.

Performance

Finish the song, Know the song

If you want to send me a couple of half ideas and see what comes out, you can. But the songs will always turn out better when the artist is happy with the whole track and knows it well.

Check your instrument is in tune

There are free apps you can download to tune your guitar etc. An out of tune instrument will bring down your song. Check it after each take! (new strings don't hurt either)

Give me your best take

If you dont like your take, you wont like the end result. I'll definitely help make it better, but whatever annoyed you with the original, will probably still annoy you at the end.

But dont be too critical of your performance. Everybody finds flaws in their own work. Sometimes those flaws make the song better. The important thing is to sound like you mean what youre playing.

Metronome/Click track

Definitely not a must have, but a metronome will help you play at a consistent tempo. Gradual speed changes may not seem too noticeable until drums are added. If you want to record with a metronome then you can find one on the app store. You'll need to use a separate device for this. You'll need to use head/earphones for the click. IMPORTANT: A lot of good takes have been ruined because of click track bleed (you can hear it on playback) Test to make sure you cant hear the click at all during playback. It will only become louder during mixing!

Recording

Noise & Echo

When recording, you need to choose a quiet spot, free from background noises like traffic or annoying families. It should also be in a smallish room with low reverb. NOT a bathroom or similar hard surface room where the sound will bounce around.

Position of the Phone

You want to position the phone to hear all instruments and vocals clearly.  To do this, you should perform a test run of your quietest then loudest section. The vocals should be the main focus. Are they clear enough without distorting?

Rough guide - vocal plus acoustic guitar = 1m/3ft away. Test various methods until you think it sounds best!

Have a microphone to record?

You can record a decent demo on your phone, but if you have can record with a studio microphone it will likely sound better. Theres more info on this here. Pay attention to all of the points on this checklist page as they still apply!

Don't know where to start?

I work with a lot of singer/songwriters who play through their song and  and I take it from there. If you're project is a little different and want to find out more, or you need advice on how to best do your song, I'm happy to help! Send me a msg with some details and we'll work it out together.
